[more+]This five-day Handwork workshop is ideal for those who are interested in creating an artist’s book centered around a theme of personal relevance. Emphasis will be placed on building book structures that complement the chosen theme.
You'll be guided through writing, brainstorming, and project planning exercises in order to develop content for your book and receive personal feedback daily. A variety of options for generating image and text will be discussed, and low-tech methods such as monotype and collagraphy will be demonstrated. Book structures covered include accordion and pamphlet bindings.
At the end of the workshop, you'll have developed original content and completed a unique artist’s book or a prototype for an edition of books centered around your chosen theme. Strategies for completing your edition or expanding upon concepts developed during the class also will be discussed.
This workshop is offered as part of Handwork: Celebrating American Craft 2026, a national initiative led by PBS's Craft in America and the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery.
Instructor: Alisa Banks
Alisa (she/her) is a visual artist living in Dallas, Tex., who investigates connections between contemporary culture, her Louisiana Creole heritage, and the African diaspora. Her interests include exploring the performative potential of the book and investigating links to the material culture of her ancestors. Alisa’s artists’ books, writings, and textile collages, which often reference traditional craft, have been exhibited internationally and are housed in several private and public collections, including the Smithsonian Institution, the US Library of Congress, The Schomburg Center, and The British Library. Alisa holds a bachelor of science degree in medical laboratory science from Oklahoma State University and a master of fine arts degree in visual art from Texas Woman’s University. www.alisabanks.com

[more+]This workshop will focus on field sketching as both reportage and sketching skill development. The format will include lectures, demonstration, field sketching, studio sketch refinement, and technique exploration in the sense of quick to long sketches. Varying media will be explored, including pencil, pen, wash, watercolor, and colored pencil.
The idea is to learn both drawing and painting skills, but also the role of sketching in reportage/documentation, storytelling, and a way to understand one’s world at a deeper level through observation and documentation. Style is a personal expression and the idea is for you to explore your own style from “cartoonish” to realistic to expressionistic.
Skill level: Open to all abilities and levels of training.
This workshop is offered as part of Handwork: Celebrating American Craft 2026, a national initiative led by PBS's Craft in America and the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery.
Instructor: Daniel Winterbottom
Daniel has a degree from Tufts University and a certificate from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He has created a range of art including painting, ceramic, sculpture, and drawing. The COVID epidemic rekindled his interest in urban sketching. His work documenting casitas — vernacular Puerto Rican gardens in NYC — has been exhibited in Museo Del Barrio and Ramapo College. In 2021, he was the only American of four awardees to receive an Urban Sketchers Reportage Grant for 2021 for his project “The Shifting Landscapes of Despair, Hope, Survival and Persistence.“

Make a Salish-Style Cedar Bentwood Box

[more+]Transform a piece of western red cedar into a traditional bentwood box carved with Salish design elements under the guidance of Suquamish Tribe elder Randi Purser. Randi Purser, whose tribal name is XWibulica, has been carving for over 10 years now, including the 14-foot Welcome Pole representing Chief Seattle's father, which stands at the start of the Sound to Olympics Trail on Bainbridge Island and pairs with her companion pole in Seattle representing Chief Seattle's mother.
This one-week, full-day Handwork class will start with a discussion about the wood and which planks from a log are likely to work for bentwood boxes. You'll receive a piece of locally milled, old-growth cedar, lay out your box, and cut V-shape kerfs for each corner. Then you'll put your prepared plank in a steam chamber to make the fibers pliable enough to bend without breaking, but only for a few minutes as you quickly fold the sides together to form a box.
You'll use wooden dowels, a modern version of the traditional hand-carved pins, to secure the only joint, where the beginning and end of the board meet. You'll also make a lid and a base for the box and attach the base. The final days will be devoted to embellishing your box by carving a traditional design suggested by the instructor or your own design.
Woven into the whole class will be a discussion about Salish design, how boxes were used, and other woodworking traditions. Salish designs were developed by people from the Columbia River north through Puget Sound and up to about the middle of Vancouver Island along its east coast. Salish designs aren't as well known as the styles used by more northern, coastal indigenous groups.
Presented as part of Handwork: Celebrating American Craft 2026, a national initiative led by PBS's Craft in America and the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery.

[more+]Jeffrey Moose Gallery is proud to welcome sculptor Dick Strom and painter Sophie Frieda for our Spring exhibition, April and May 2026. Receptions will be held on First Friday, April 3rd and First Friday, May 1st from 6 to 8 PM. A Facebook Livestream will happen previous to the April event from roughly 5:20-5:40.
Dick Strom was born and raised in West Port Madison on Bainbridge Island, learning welding and metal working as a teenager. His family founded Modern Collision auto repair business in 1974. He attended High School on Bainbridge and then spent three years in the US Marine Corps. His sculptures and commissioned works have graced the Island for decades. Strom works both representationally and abstractly, creating fanciful animals and figures with the same ease as he creates abstract compositions from gears, wheels, chains and just about any type of scrap steel. Most often sited outside, Strom’s sculptures are quite comfortable both in landscape and in homes. Self taught and modest, he often demurs when called an artist.
Sophie Frieda, a classically trained painter of British origin, concentrates on plant life, some local and some tropical. She works primarily in oil on canvas, focusing tightly on foliage and flowers, creating intimate views from the perspective of a rabbit or bird. Her work is refined and precise, created with fine strokes and accurate color yet not cold and photographic. A sort of sympathetic realism thats immediately appealing. Her education includes a BA from Central St Martins college in London and another BA Honors Degree from California College of the Arts
In San Francisco. Her work has been shown at Bainbridge Arts and Crafts, BIMA, Bloedel Reserve as well as in local galleries and is held in collections in the UK, France, Australia, Washington state, California, Texas, D.C. and Connecticut.

[more+]Stories of migration, labor, and resilience and too often overlooked or are distilled to only headlines. Poet Ricardo Ruiz uplifts these voices through his poetry and storytelling. His bilingual works often center on his experiences as a first-generation Mexican-American who grew up in a Mexican farmworker community in Eastern Washington.
Before hearing Ruiz’s moving words, start your evening at a reception where you can purchase signed copies of his books, such as the award-winning We Had Our Reasons by Ricardo Ruiz, and other hard-working Mexicans from Eastern Washington. Then, move into the auditorium for a reading by Ruiz and students from his recent BARN workshop, “Portals of the Poetic Self: The Five Senses.” The powerful evening will end with a Q&A session with the audience.
About the Handwork Week 2026 BARN Workshop: Portals of the Poetic Self: The Five Senses
Together, BIMA and BARN are partnering to bring audiences and makers closer through both public dialogue (at BIMA) and hands-on creative exploration (at BARN). Ruiz’s BIMA talk complements his extended visit to Bainbridge Island as a featured instructor for BARN’s Handwork Week 2026.
As part of BARN’s Handwork Week, Ruiz will lead “Portals of the Poetic Self: The Five Senses” (April 27–May 1, 2026, 1–5 PM daily), an immersive workshop exploring sensory-rich poetry grounded in lived experience. Participants will engage in close readings, peer workshops, and personalized feedback sessions, learning to approach stories with honesty and care while developing a polished portfolio of poems. This workshop offers guidance for writers at all levels, emphasizing storytelling in accessible language, while honoring the raw truth of personal experience.
About the Artist
Ricardo Ruiz is a multi-dimensional writer of poetry and prose. The son of potato factory workers, Ricardo hails from Othello, Washington. He is passionate about elevating marginalized voices from rural communities and takes pride in being a conduit for cultural connection. Ruiz’s work draws from his experience as a first-generation Mexican-American, and from his military service, where he served on four deployments.
Ruiz holds an Associate Degree in Business and Accounting from Big Bend Community College, where he was recognized as Student of the Year in both Business and Economics, and English Composition. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Washington. His debut collection of poetry reached #1 on Amazon’s Hispanic-American Poetry Chart and was selected as a finalist for the Washington State Book Award in Poetry 2023.

[more+]In this intimate, moderated conversation, internationally recognized book artist, Alisa Banks, will discuss how her artist’s books and fiber-based works emerge from examining memory, cultural tradition, and archive. To help imagine new, unconventional ways to read, pieces will be highlighted that demonstrate her novel structural elements–like sculptural bindings, textile collages, and incorporation of hair, cloth, plant matter, and soil.
BIMA’s curator of the Cynthia Sears Artists’ Books Collection, Erin Zona, will moderate the discussion. It will be followed by an audience Q&A and reception in the galleries.
About the Handwork Week 2026 BARN Workshop: Speak Your Piece: Artist's Books with Meaning
Together, BIMA and BARN are partnering to bring audiences and makers closer to contemporary book arts through both public dialogue (at BIMA) and hands-on creative exploration (at BARN).
Banks’s BIMA talk complements her extended visit to Bainbridge Island as a featured instructor for BARN’s Handwork Week 2026.
At BARN, Banks will be leading a week-long workshop, “Speak Your Piece: Artist’s Books with Meaning” (April 27–May 1, 2026). In it, she will guide participants in transforming personal stories into sculptural books through bookbinding, printmaking, material exploration, and narrative development.
About the Artist
Alisa Banks (Dallas, TX) (she/her) is a visual artist who challenges and investigates unconventional modes of reading. Banks, located in Dallas, Texas, examines connections between contemporary culture, her Louisiana Creole heritage, and the African diaspora. Banks insists that stories are not confined to written language. Instead, they can be held in materials, gestures, rituals, and the tactile knowledge passed from hand to hand across generations.
Banks’ works have been exhibited nationally and internationally, and are housed in several private and public collections, including the Smithsonian Institution, the US Library of Congress, The Schomburg Center, The British Library, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, and the Cynthia Sears Collection of the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art. Alisa holds a B.S. degree in Medical Laboratory Science from Oklahoma State University and a M.F.A. degree in Visual Art from Texas Woman’s University.
